I have a 6 year old boy who thinks he's superman and jumps off everything....and our first broken bone came from my 3 year old princess! We were at the park Tuesday AM and she was on a little stool/swing that you stand on and it kind of "wobbles" while you are on it. She got ready to jump off, it wobbled, and she toppled....right onto her elbow. I took her to the pediatrician, they x-rayed it and confirmed a broken bone, right above the elbow. We couldn't get into the ped ortho until 4 so we "rested" at home several hours before returning to St. Johns. Finally at 5:30, the ped ortho confirmed that she had broken all THREE bones in her arm at the elbow (humerus, radius, and ulna!) The forearm breaks were minor, but the humerus break was displaced so closed reduction surgery is scheduled for Friday morning with several pins. For now it's just tylenol with codeine for comfort! Good news is that the cast will only be on 3.5 weeks and then she will have a removeable cast for 3.5 weeks. Bad news is that she can't get it wet AT ALL. Good news is that the cast will be off before her dance recital. Bad news is that the new soccer cleats she's getting for her birthday can't be used for camp in June. She's been pretty brave....except when Luke told her that his friend Katey had to have her cast removed with a saw! Big brothers aren't always the most encouraging!! The doctor said that her break is extremely rare and she's only seen 5 in her 20 years of pediatric surgery. Most kids fall on outstretched arms and hyperextend the elbow causing the bone to break posteriorly. Since Lora fell on her elbow, a bent arm, the bone broke anteriorly. So rare that she had to open her medical book up...and then show us the 1/2 a paragraph they denoted to this kind of break. Very reassurring....
