Turkey Day
It was an exciting year for Kirkwood football. THe varsity team made it to the state semifinals and played Webster for a chance to play for state championship in the Dome the day after THanksgiving. The playoff game was held at Kirkwood on a Friday night and there were about 10,000 people in attendance. I got there 20 minute early and there was standing room only. What an exciting evening! However, Kirkwood lost, 28-0. This meant that Webster would play in the state finals. BEcause of this, the coaches turned Turkey Day into a JV game and Coach Irvin appointed Bill as head coach for the day. He definitely felt the pressure the week prior to Turkey Day. He was pretty nervous and when the big day arrived, it was nothing like anyone expected! First off, it was COLD. When we got to the game it had just started raining. As the game progressed, the rain turned to sleet and then freezing rain, and then horizonal snow. At one point it was a blizzard and the sportscasters couldn't even read the yardage line! My mom stayed home with the girls while my dad, Luke, and I went to the game. Luke ended up sitting in the car and playing gameboy the whole second half (and stated it was the BEST Thanksgiving EVER!). Dad and I stuck it out, but took frequent breaks to go warm up in the car. Unfortunately, Kirkwood lost 14-12. No one could throw or catch a ball - it was too cold! There were definitely memories made on this day...we just aren't sure if they were good or bad!
Look at the condition of that field!
