On Ash Wednesday we had several errands to run and several activities for the kids to attend. I knew that in the process of our travels we would run across someone with ashes on their forehead. To avoid embarrassment from my children (Mommy, WHAT IS THAT ON THEIR HEAD??!!!) I explained the meaning and significance of Ash Wednesday before we left the house. Here is how the conversation went:
Me: Lent signifies the beginning of the 40 days leading up to Jesus dying on the cross. To remember how important this time of year is, many people attend church today, called Ash Wednesday. Some churches even put ashes, in the shape of a cross, on the people's foreheads so that they can remember that Jesus died on the cross for them. Then, because Jesus spent his 40 days before He died in prayer and fasting, people sometimes give up something for Lent. (for those of you who are MUCH WISER than I...i.e. most everyone...please feel free to correct me on what part of this explanation I completely botched)
Luke: Mom, I want to give up my Gameboy
Me: WOW! That's a big commitment. (then in my head)...ohhh, in the next 40 days we have a trip to Florida planned. 13 hours each way in the car without a Gameboy....not good.
Me: Well, sometimes people do something extra for Lent, to help them remember Jesus. Like read their Bible more, pray more...
Luke: I like that idea better. I would like to pray more.
Me: (in my head) whew...
Lora: Mommy, I want to give up soda
Me: You don't drink soda
Lora: I know, but chocolate milk is my favorite. If I drank soda, I think THAT would be my favorite. So, I will give that up.
Me: Maybe we should think of something else....
Lora: OK, I'll pray more with Luke
Kids crack me up.....Happy Lent!
I'm glad your trip to Florida will be MUCH more enjoyable! That was a close call!
